Criccieth’s Unique Streets – Partnership Working in Town

It is exciting to be able to announce the news of the success of Criccieth Town Council and Criccieth Business Forum in securing a grant of £16,000 from Arloesi Gwynedd Wledig for a Unique Streets Project to support a number of excellent ideas which have been presented to increase the number of visitors to the town. In addition, the Town Council is pleased to contribute £1,500 making a total of £17,500 available to work on this exciting project.

Since September 2017 Criccieth Town Council has worked with the community to develop a Community Plan for Criccieth in order to improve the economic, social, environment and cultural welfare of the town. The Town Council held an Open Day on 23 September 2017, attended by hundreds of residents and visitors which provided an opportunity to input ideas for a Community Plan.  This was followed with workshops to develop a plan in 2018. This resulted in the establishment of project specific community groups reporting to Council.  Workshops with business owners, residents, societies, clubs and other community groups continue on a range of objectives and priorities for the town as part of the plan. One important element is the town’s economy.

Criccieth is a relatively small, historic and attractive  town in a seaside location which has something to offer visitors and its residents all year round –however, it is a continuing challenge to ensure a thriving economy in the town in the face of changing shopping habits which is a common and universal trend. Councillor Elizabeth George, Chair of the Town Council said that: “Working together ensures that more effective results can be achieved than through working alone and these initiative monies offer opportunites to work in partnership to increase the number of visitors and spend in the area. The months ahead promise to be exciting ones for the town.  The Town Council and Criccieth Business Forum look forward to working with Criccieth Hub and the young people of the town to realise the aims of this project which would not be possible without these funds. Thanks to Arloesi Gwynedd Wledig for their support.  Plans and activities will be announced in due course.”

Criccieth Community Plan

This is a report by the Town Council following a public consultation on 23 September 2017 to develop Criccieth's Community Plan.

Consultation by Criccieth Town Council on a recommendation by the Welsh Language Commissioner contained in the Draft Proposals Report by the Local Democracy and Boundary Commission For Wales on the Electoral Arrangements of the County of Gwynedd

The Commission is inviting comments and any new evidence before preparing their Final Proposals – consultation period between 30 January 2018 and 23 April 2018. Gwynedd Council did not propose any changes for Criccieth; The Commission is not proposing any changes to the geographical and ward name for Criccieth. However, the Welsh Language Commissioner has recommended:

Criccieth  to be renamed Cricieth as it is the recognised name in the Gazetteer of Welsh Place Names.  The Welsh Language Commissioner recommends, when the Welsh and English names only differ by one or two letters, the use of a single form is recommended, with preference being given to the Welsh form”

This recommendation was considered by Criccieth Town Council at a recent meeting and following a vote, the majority view was to retain the historical, recognised name for the electoral ward as Criccieth and that this was the correct Welsh version. It was agreed to invite the views of Criccieth residents, to be sent to the Clerk in good time for Council’s April meeting.  What is your view? If you have any comments, you are welcome to contact the Clerk by 31 March 2018.  Contact details are available on our website.  You also have the right to contact the Commission directly.
